FOUR armed robbers in Gwanda were shot dead yesterday by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) during a shootout.

This comes barely a month after an alarm was raised by MDC-A Matebeleland South Member of Parliament Honourable Sipho Mokone over the issue of marauding armed robbers in Gwanda in Parliament.

In response, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Munister, Hon. Kazembe Kazembe noted that many robberies were occuring in Gwanda for its proximity to gold reserves. He also said since January, Gwanda has recorded 30 robberies.

“From January to date, a total of 30 robbery cases have been recorded in Gwanda Town of which 12 were plain robberies, 16 involved other weapons and two involved fire arms,” he said.

ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday said the shootout occured after the robbers resisted arrest.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said the police saw that they were armed and that is when a shootout ensued leading to the shooting of the armed robbers.
“The robbers stole from a woman around 10 am, leading to police pursuit of the robbers.

“They were seen by police officers around 3pm and were pursued, and since they were armed, a shootout ensued leading to the death of the armed robbers,” he said.
