THE Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (PSL) has abruptly suspended all matches for three weeks with immediate effect to give time for maintenance works at the giant National Sports stadium in Harare.

In a statement released by the local league governing body in the country on Wednesday, June 7, PSL communications and media liaison officer Kudzai Bare said league action will resume on the 1st of July 2023.

The suspension of topflight matches has been necessitated by the maintenance work on water reticulation being carried out at the National Sports Stadium, noted Bare in the statement.

“This serves to advise that the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League is taking a break with immediate effect and will resume on the 1st of July 2023.

“This has been necessitated by the maintenance work on water reticulation being carried out at the National Sports Stadium and to allow the playing field to regenerate”, she said.

PSL is hoping that by the time the games resume most of the stadia that have been under refurbishment would be ready to host matches in order to ease pressure on the National Sports Stadium, which of late has been hosting eight PSL teams week in week out, among them, Dynamos, Caps United, Black Rhinos as well as the new boys, Simba Bhora among others.

“We also expect refurbishment works at Rufaro, Nyamhunga and Sakubva stadia to be completed before we resume Castle Lager PSL matches.” added Bare.

The prevailing situation needs to be addressed because in such a scenario where eight teams use one facility, it is the pitch that suffers at the end of the day as there will be little or no time for maintenance.
